Although many have picked on and torn apart Disney’s California Adventure Theme Park ever since it opened back in February 2001, I would have a hard time imagining anyone criticizing The Grand Californian Hotel...at least not for any legitimate reasons! Styled in the Arts & Crafts tradition, it is truly a class act; very few details were overlooked in its creation. Many times I have walked through its entry doors and thought, “Thank goodness they didn’t cut corners here!” And if they did, it surely doesn’t show. Here is the concept art that was distributed in the 1996 publicity packets for DCA:
One of the first things that you notice as you pull up is a classic 1932 Cadillac. This antique beauty has been used in Hollywood in a number of films and TV shows including “Charmed,” “The X-Files,” “Annie,” “13 Floors,” and “The Two Jakes.”
The stained-glass automatic opening doors make for a stunning entrance; you immediately feel like you are entering something special.
The lobby itself is breathtaking; although gargantuan in size, its warm colors, antique furnishings, and very friendly customer service make it extremely inviting.
The collection of art and antiques throughout the hotel have been expertly chosen; authentic to the Arts & Crafts theme, and tastefully placed.
Many hotels do a fantastic job of theming the exterior and the lobby space, but when it comes to the rooms...totally cookie cutter. Not so with The Grand Californian. The rooms are comfortable, decorated with style and taste, and just the right amount of Disney without being “in your face.”
The downside to the Grand Californian is the price. Sure, it’s pricey most of the year, but if you’re a saavy shopper, you can often catch a good deal. And what better place to celebrate a special occasion than this grand tribute to The Arts & Crafts Movement?
As for the restaurants...that’s a whole other story. I will be back in the very near future to cover that!

This really is a fantastic new hotel. The lobby is simply amazing. Probably one of the better Disney hotel entrances I have seen in quite sometime.
