I know this was announced a few days back, but I just had to comment on the demise of the Virgin Megastore in Downtown Disney. According to the AP, the stores were generally profitable, but the company that owned Virgin Entertainment Group felt that they could reap higher profits from leasing out the spaces occupied by the Virgin Megastores. This obviously comes as no huge surprise, as people increasingly download music from online sources, but it is a bummer, nonetheless. I remember walking into the store for the first time, and I was awe-struck by the sheer size of the building. I always thought they were a little high priced, compared to Best Buy and Amazon, but the selection for a retail store was unbelievable. I'm really hoping something cool can go into the spot that Virgin Megastore is vacating. John, over at TheDisneyBlog discussed the possibility of an ESPNZone, although he notes that this may conflict with their plans to do more with the newly themed ESPN Wide World of Sports. I would think that they would get rolling on deciding what to do with the space fairly quickly, and they more-than-likely have been planning for this for some time.
How about you? Are you bummed out that the Virgin Megastore is closing in Downtown Disney? I always enjoyed looking through there, and will miss the store.
